 It could be worse... November 16, 2008
First, understand that I love off road games and all of them offer something new and exicting. Baja is a solid game, but it the controls, and the handling and the game play are on the weaker side.
The graphics engine is a year old at least, so don't expect 2008 quality. The best part of Baja is the actual footage of real Baja races - that was sweet.
If you want a solid off-road game with a lot of realism - buy DIRT - otherwise I enjoyed this one for the money.

I really WANTED and expected to rate this game higher. Graphics are fantastic, although they could use a bit more tuning for overall fit and finish. Still, the scenery is gorgeous.
My big complaint with this game is the excessive difficulty. I am a veteran racer and long time fan of the genre, but this is by far the most difficult racing game I have ever played. Even on "easy", you are hard pressed to top anywhere near the top three once you get out of the opening class of rigs. Very dissappointing that they would make a game so overwhelmingly difficult. If not for that, this could be a four star game, easily. Instead, it ends up being endless hours of frustration.

I have been racing off-road trucks and cars for over 17 years and I have to say this is the the best off-road game every created. though in honesty there hasnt been that many.
the Pros: The graphics are awsome, the Terrain and Vehicle Graphics. They did a great job of recreating some of the worlds best off-road race teams, and actual race cars and trucks in this Game. Go to any BITD, or Score race and you will see most if all of the teams depicted in this game. for the most part the game play is very fun. the sounds of the Vehicles are almost perfect, even right down to the squeeling brakes and rocks in the undercarrige. The vehicle setup is fairly realistic when it comes to Suspension and tranny and others. and the vehicle up grades are fairly realistic as well. also its good to see alot of the big name off-road companies in this game. From BFG, to Ford, to Jimco and Porter, to Fox shocks and hundreds more.
CONS: To Arcade like in some aspects. when hitting a jump you can semi control the truck in the air. there is no button in a real life truck that lets you control it once you leave the ground. its all on your driving and suspension set up. thats how it should be in the game.
while the support Chopper is fun. its very unrealistic. in fact its down right illegal to have chopper support fix your vehicle in real life. The one thing I think the makers realy missed was Check points and Pits. they are such a huge, huge part of Desert racing. if you can limp your broken car to a pit mabay you can get fixed. Thats how it should have been in the game. on Circuit mode they have a BFG hot pit set up. but its almos worthless on Circuit mode. the races are so competitve you realy dont have time to stop. if you stop your out of the running.
also to arcade like is the damage. cosmetic wise it looks awsome. but you realy have to constantly beat your vehicle up before it realy breaks.
also some big names didnt get in the game for some reason. Chuck Hovey in class 1, Curt Leduc in Class 8, Team Ford in Trophy Truck class. those are just off the top of my head. and some teams Vehicles got depicted wrong. Team Margaritas car in the game is a Cheneworth when in real life is a Jimco. Bennett Truckings Class 8 is a 70's Ford, not a 60's Ford. and Moss Brothers racing class 3 is a Ford Bronco not a Chevy Blazer. I am sure there are a few more. but this is a small complaint.
overall this game rocks. IT is fun to play, the Graphics and sounds are awsome. there is some great live clips in the game here and there. if you want a racing game thats not the Norm, or if you love Desert racing. this is the game for you.

Pros
great audio, great graphics (not the vehicles), good physics
Cons
Vehicle graphics, self righting landings, arcade steer in the air ability, poor dipiction of failures, extremely hard to advance
Overall this a balanced game. It has some really good strong points and some really bad ones. Running a Baja race, a flat tire is part of the action. Yet the way it's depicted is cheap and not well thought out graphically, as well as, it's arcade-like. A flat tire looks more like a tire out of balance which beats up the shocks but when you stop, it doesn't look flat at all. Add to that, you might expect a tire to fragment if driven on for 50 or more miles but in the game it actually runs better.
I've had to rerun so many races just to place top 3 that my XP points allow me to run in the highest bracket. Great you might think, but it's not. You have to buy your vehicles with your winnings. So you end up having to rerun the same races over and over to get enough money to buy a vehicle at the next level and the highest level of upgrades which equall or are more than the vehicle itself. To get first place in the races, you'll need those upgrades and also know where you can severly cut corners without penalty.
The next gripe is the camera control. It's okay in the in-vehicle modes, but external is not intuitive nor acurate.
In the end, I'm selling the game and getting Grid or Dirt.
 Great game, poor online interface September 28, 2008
Gameplay is exactly what you expect........Baja racing. The designers put lots of effort into the graphics, track layouts and game physics but.... no effort into online interface.
Unfortunatly the online interface is crap. If you join a race already in progress you join as a spectator. When the race is over, a new race starts automatically. If your a Spectator from the previous race you cannot join new race. These are long races you could be waiting along time expecting to join a race only to get dolced.
If your hosting a game and a race ends, it automatically launches the next map. You have no option to stop or change maps or vehicles or let new people or spectators join. You have to start a new room.
Some of these races last anywhere between 20 mins to 1 hour. When your in the race there is no milage indicator to let you know how much longer you have. There is not indicator to let a spectator know how much longer the race will be.
From the lobby there is no indication if a race is in already in progress or just forming up and you dont want to join a race that is already in progress becuase then you'll join as spectator. So you can spend an hour going from room to room to room to room waiting to get lucky to join a race that is just about to begin.
you can host a game but because everyone is jerking around going from room to room it can take forever to find a group of guys ready to race. it frustrating.
If you choose quick match where the system automatically places you in a room you think you'd stand a chance. guess what 9 times out of ten the system puts you in a room where a race already in progress. You join as a spectator and you have no option even when the race completes to join the next race.
there are no vehicle stats, there are alot of premade vehicles to choose from, but no info on speed, handling or suspension. You choose a vehicle because you like the pretty color conbination I guess.
No replays.
I give the game an A+ cause the racing is fun and career mode is decent even though the AI is very tough to beat even at 70%. But the fun of a racing game is online play, the interface is so clumbsy and lazy I give it a D. With that said its not a $60 game maby $30. Rent first or wait till after christmas when prices drop or pick up a used copy at gamestop.
If they patch the game I will change my review but until then 2 stars at best.
