RE4's a good game but don't buy any of the greatest game ever nonsense. I'm a fairly big fan of RE, the first one was great for it's time, RE2 was one of the best PS1 games ever, and RE3 and code veronica were good but started to tread on the same ground a bit to much. Well, Capcom decided to give RE a makeover and to be honest they kept most of the bad things and got rid of allot of the good stuff. To start, the game is simply no longer scary. The reason for this is the atmosphere of the game which is simply goofy. The old RE games were pretty realistic in the Video game spectrum but this one is just silly. Let's see, monk's firing at you with rocket launchers, chainsaw maniac zombies, climbing a staircase and avoiding barrels donkey king style, cheesy shooting galleries sprinkled throughout the place, etc. None of these would have made it within a mile of the old RE's, and it real takes away from any sense of fear you get from this game.
RE4 also pretty much forces you to fight endless battles. I think you kill more baddies in one of the games 5 chapters then for the entire RE1. It's fun for a while but the fighting gets boring and you want the game to move on.
Capcom still hasn't fixed the 'human tank' system of control from the other games. I guess if they made the controls like Metal Gear Solid you could just run through everything, but can we get some controls that are as good as Silent Hill at least? When the crazy guy from Silent Hill 2 can strafe and shoot while walking but your secret agent leon can't we have a problem.
Other problems, most of the gear in the game is in boxes that you have to break open with your knife instead of just picking up, which gets extremely annoying after a while and really takes away from the replay of the game, having to break open like 2 thousand boxes and barrels to get the gear to survive.
RE4 has it's good points, (amazing graphics, decent story) and overall its a decent game but it definitely doesn't live up to the RE name.

Resident Evil 4This game isn't that good.I mean it's a really good game,actually,i loved it.But that doesn't take away the fact that it is boring after beating it once.Also,it's a disgrace to the Resident Evil franchise.This is because it wasn't even scary,it was only really,really violent.If you played the other games you would know that it isn't even similar to it.When i said it was a disgrace,i didn't mean it was bad,i meant that it is nothing like the resident evil series,it's more like a shooter game.But i suspect that Resident Evil 5 will be better because it is connected to the series,unlike RE4.Wesker is also appearing in the game,so i am looking forward for it.I still liked the game,but not that much.My advice would be to get Bioshock instead.

RE4 was amazing! I played it at a friend's party; it's a pretty difficult game if you're not used to games like this. But even so, my friends and I spent hours in the middle of the night, screaming at each other along the lines of "SHOOT HIM!" "I'M TRYING" "OHMAHGAWD" "LOOK OUT IT'S GONNA KILL YOU" "Aw died again..." Sometimes, the characters are difficult to maneuver, resulting in death, but that being said, best game I've ever played. For sure =}
 Easily the best Resident Evil game to date October 5, 2008
Few games can take a series with diehard fans, change it drastically in terms of gameplay and controls and still keep original fans happy while attracting an onslaught of new ones. Resident Evil 4 takes alot of chances for a series that was starting to feel stale, and shook up the genre, series and the future of its next games.
Resident Evil 4 has reach critical acclaim. Critics love it, fans alike love it. I personally, am also one of the millions who savored every bit of this great Playstation 2 title that was released (as an exclusive) on the Nintendo Gamecube. If you've played the Gamecube version and are curious if you should drop some cash on this "port" the answer is an emphatic 'yes'.
As much as RE4 supplies suspense, creative characters / enemies, a good plot, intelligent dialogue (for once) and great gameplay mechanics (first time for everything) this game is not the perfect game. No game is perfect, that's obvious. But while RE4 may stumble here or there, nothing is so glaring or painfully bad that it ruins the title. This game, to be honest, should be owned by all faithful fans of videogames who love a good time. RE4 never misses on that aspect.
The story is a simple one, nothing too complicated. You play as Leon Kennedy (back from the second game) and you travel to Europe to rescue toe President's daughter. Rumors have it that she was spotted in a small, rural community in the woods. That's all you have to go on. Most of the screenshots you have seen have been of the opening area, the woods and cabins. And this is where the game starts, but where it takes you leaves almost no stone unturned.
Obviously, since this is a Resident Evil game there is going to be horror and suspenseful moments throughout. Of course the game isn't going to be a simple recue missions with "normal" citizens causing a problem. No, no, no, the problem is much worse. This is however, where some fans will get turned off; the enemies aren't the zombies of previous games, but they aren't "fully functional" human beings either. Something has made them go a little mad. While the story unfolds you understand the story and get information from cutscenes, letters, documents and other characters. But some fans have hated that the zombies are gones.
Along with no zombies, the game just isn't as frightening as previous games. No longer just walking through dark hallways looking for keys, RE4 throws you into real environments and asks you to survive by any means. That's not to say this is a friendly walk in the park. Lunatics with chainsaws, pitchfork weilding psychotics and parasites galore run throughout the game. While the game is tense, difficult and stunningly well portrayed, it isn't truly horrifying.
The atmosphere is still there, that's for sure, but the scenery isn't dark and bland. This is a good thing and makes the series feel fresh again, but some people just prefer dark corridors over woods and European settings.
That is mainly the only downfall of the title. The new behind the shoulder camera mode is fantastic (so you can actually see what you're doing) and having a laser to show where you're aiming is well done. Some fans complain that this makes the game easy, and in a sense yes. There are more weapons, more ammunition, more ways to survive, but if you panic in some scenarios, you're a goner and get a chainsaw to the neck. Game over for you, bud.
The settings in the game are all fully realized and a sight to behold. Even on the less-than-stellar PS2, the graphics are amazing. No real worries about rushed graphics or bland environments. These are all detailed worlds you walk through.
Additionally, the bosses are spectacular. Most, if not all, are extremely memorable. Without giving anything away, you simply cannot just shoot until it dies, that won't work here. You need to be smart and learn your opponent. It really adds a new depth to the game itself. But besides boss fights, you will kill a vast array of "regular" enemies. Where most games give you 2 or 3 different enemy types, RE4 stacks the deck against you. You never get bored and you never feel comfortable in the game.
The music, voice overs and dialogue is all crisp and helps entrance you in the game. The score is excellent at setting the tone and never comes across as overdone. The whispers and chanting of the townspeople and their screams are almost haunting.
As for how long you'll play the game? Get ready to set aside a large portion of your life. RE4's main story will likely take 20-25 hours easily, and once you're done there are loads of unlockables. The PS2 version has extra content in the Ada Missions and others which don't feel tacked on. They feel and play like it could be a full game by itself. Nothing takes a hit here, which is amazing since the PS2 version came out 9 months after it's Gamecube brother.
Even without the extras, just unlocking new weapons and customizing (and getting to keep them) for the next playthrough is amazing. Great depth in this portion as you can build up your best weapons and have a field day in another playthrough. Might not be as scary, but just as fun.
As I said before, everyone should own this game. Not so much "survival horror" anymore as it is just "action adventure" but nonetheless, you do not want to miss this one.
A PHENOMENAL AND MIND-BLOWING GAME 10 OUT OF 10 October 5, 2008
This game is the main reason I purchased a PS2, and I'm damn well glad I purchased the system for this thrilling masterpiece. Before RE4, I struggled with the past numbered entries. I enjoyed them, but they were frustrating as hell. RE1: Why are there so many locked doors?! Why can't fight off a zombie when he tries to eat me? Ugh... SO MUCH CRAP TO FIND! RE2: Who the hell builds a police station like this?! There shouldn't be this many locked doors and passageways in a police station! Damn you lickers and zombie dogs! RE3: Ahhh!! GO AWAY NEMESIS, GO AWAY! Run Jill Valentine run, you slow b**ch! DAMMIT! I'm dead from a f***ing rocket launcher... FANTASTIC. But RE4 completely rebuilt the franchise from scratch and gave it new life. If you didn't play RE4 solely for the fact you had many troubles with the past entries. Worry not, this entry has eased the difficulty by miles and it's paced far better than the past entries. This means those long moments of nothing are pretty much eliminated.
WHAT THE GAME IS: This game is a mix between survival-horror and third-person shooter, though it feels more like a third-person shooter. Leon Kennedy (The guy from RE2 and he had a brief role in Gaiden) has been sent on a mission to rescue the President's kidnapped daughter; Ashley Graham; in an obscure part of what appears to be Spain. During his mission there, the villagers attack and attempt to kill Leon. It also turns out these villagers are infected with something. These guys aren't the rotting corpses you remember from the old RE games, these guys are meaner and more deadly. He must find the source of the outbreak and look for the secrets surrounding a mysterious organization that operates there.
GRAPHICS: Who said PS2 visuals are bad? This game looks great and even looks better than some of my Xbox 360 games. Overall, the visuals look great and really know how to milk the PS2 hardware for what it's worth.
MUSIC: There is little present most of the time, something I miss from the old RE games because there was always some kind of creepy music in the background. It comes up at key moments but is sadly absent most of the time.
SOUND: Shooting, dying screams, chainsaws, and exploding heads.
GAMEPLAY: This game introduced the over-the-shoulder camera which works quite well when shooting. The shooting mechanics work well and use the same button layout as the past RE games (R1 to aim, X to fire). You get to shoot lots of zombies, and ammo is far more plentiful than most likely all the other RE games combined. There is a great selection of weapons to buy or find like guns, rocket launchers, and grenades. There are a bunch of other items to buy in the game as well. This game also has an upgrades system in which for a fee of some sort you can have your weapons upgraded to enlarge fire power and how much ammo a weapon can carry. But be warned the item compression system from the old RE games is still here, meaning you can only carry a certain number of items. This item compression system is at least far better than the old ones, allowing you to carry a large number of items before running out of room. You can also buy another box if you find your current one too small. This game also has a lot more health recovering items as well. You can even shoot fish and eat them along with chicken eggs to heal you. This game's main focus; shooting; works very well and the targeting system is among the most reliable I've ever used in a game. This game has great boss battles that are carefully balanced and heart-racing. This game relies on some timed button press scenes like the boulder scene or dodging some other large object that's coming at you. One part of the game I found rather surprising was the escort mission. All gamers pretty much hate escort missions because the person you're protecting is annoying and you'd rather see them die than let them live because it would just be a burden. Not in this game. The escort mission wasn't tedious or frustrating at all, and it was quite nice for a change to protect someone who isn't annoying as hell. Puzzles are cleverly devised in this game, and can be real brain-teasers at times and they weren't boring to solve. Every part of the gameplay is polished to perfection and can't really think of a way to knock off points against it. GO BUY THIS GAME NOW.
OVERALL: This game is a superb and phenomenal and the gameplay is perfect.
THE GOOD: Perfect gameplay, lots of guns, lots of zombies, lots of ammo, lots of health recovery, great story, an escort mission that doesn't suck, it's thrilling, good boss battles, great characters, and great graphics.
THE BAD: The lack of music is the only thing that's wrong with this game.
