| Customer Reviews: Good product for the money March 6, 2010 Epyon29 Not a bad use of money - especially if you aren't dropping a few thousand on actual courses for the LSAT. The CD included with the book doesn't work with any computer that's got Vista or Windows 7 on it (and may not run on some XP systems). This was a source of great consternation, and I almost returned the book until I stumbled across the instructions in the FRONT of the book for online access through Kaplan. Instructions on how to access content or find the instructions TO access the content were nonexistent and did not appear in the table of contents. However, the online access (included in purchase price) includes a number of video lessons, practice quizzes, diagnostic tests, and a couple more practice tests. The value of the online content significantly outweighs the consternation of the CD not working with my computer, and to me, the online content rectifies the CD problem.
Great LSAT prep guide February 2, 2010 SC (New York, NY) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I used the Kaplan LSAT 2010-2011 Premier with CD-ROM and didn't have any of the problems that `RealWriter' experienced. The CD that comes with the book is a bonus accessory that is there to help guide you along with the book. The CD is not needed to run simultaneously with the book rather as an extra guide when you so choose. I found that the different sections and diagnostic test really helped me when it came down to taking the full length practice test. To `RealWriter', the fact that you experienced problems running the CD does not mean that Kaplan is selling or promoting a defective product. Rather, they are promoting a product geared to help each individual boost their own personal score by using different tools and strategies while still focusing on previous LSAT questions.
Got A Post 2004 Windows PC/Laptop? Then Don't Waste Your Money On This Book January 10, 2010 RealWriter 4 out of 9 found this review helpful
Yeah, so, I bought Kaplan LSAT 2010-2011 Premier with CD-ROM (Kaplan LSAT Premier Program (W/CD)) (Paperback) thinking the interactive thing was for me--the entire book is integrated with the included CD and you can't use the book without the CD--at all. "Now, that's a REAL interactive experience," I'm thinking. I'm bright, social media and tech savvy and need a intellectually stimulating way to prep for the LSAT, right? I look at the tech requirements for the CD and think, "Okay, this will work. It's runs on Vista. Front cover says '2010' so, yeah, it's up-to-date."
So, I get it home, whip out the CD, put it in my 13 month old, Vista Ultimate 64-bit laptop. I run the installation and launch the program--er, ATTEMPT to launch the program and, instead of a bright, shiny, interactive experience, I get "This application requires the MCI drivers for Windows to be installed. Please install the MCI drivers as instructed in your sound card's user manual.". So, a bit annoyed but not yet disheartened, I set about trying to correct the problem since, after all, it MUST be me or my laptop, right?
I make sure it has all the permissions set correctly in my firewalls, give it extra permission, enable some other stuff and make sure my software is all up-to-date. I launch again--same message. So, being social media savvy, I go online and enter into my fave search engine, "MCI drivers" Vista 64 Kaplan CD" and begin wading through the slew of complaints and reports of similar problems, even on Windows XP, for which KAPLAN REFUSES TO PROVIDE A SOLUTION. They send the obviously inept buyer of their $40 test guide to Microsoft, blaming them for the OBVIOUS DEFECT THAT HAS PERSISTED SINCE 2004 when the software was created that their developers have NEVER FIXED.
Moreover, Kaplan only accepts tech support calls from those who spend thousands of dollars on their online or classroom test prep programs. They fail to (1) understand the power of social media--WE WILL OUT YOU KAPLAN!, (2) understand the power of the words, "Um, yes, I'd like a full refund for this book because its CD is defective? I mean, the book says the software program runs on Vista but the program is a 2004 program and, well, there WAS no Vista in 2004. Do you have Princeton's book with the CD?" CHA CHING! and (3) by failing to get the small things right--you know, the $40 book!--they lose thousands of potential customers because why should **I** trust you with $2K when I can't trust you with 40 bucks??
The fact is, Kaplan knows it's selling a defective product and has for years. They claim to be the number one test prep service in the country generating the highest scores. While that marketing program is generating some pretty high dollars, the publisher is also engendering distrust among thousands of book and CD purchasers who feel cheated and ignored by Kaplan--and who know hundreds of others who might be considering doing Kaplans whole program. I mean, Kaplan, ever heard of FACEBOOK and TWITTER??
Unless you're a glutton for punishment (or have an ancient PC in the basement you can use to run this CD...though, it probably need to connect to the internet with an ethernet cord) don't bother with this book and CD. You'll only be disappointed when you can't use it and will lose precious prep time by having to return it and start fresh with something else. And, do make sure you tell your friends about your Kaplan experience because, if they can't be trusted with your $40, how can they be trusted with $2K or more?
Buy the real thing - from LSAC January 6, 2010 Mariposa 1 out of 5 found this review helpful
I did buy the Kaplan study guide without really researching it, and used it for all my studying. But right before my LSAT date, I went to a forum with a speaker from LSAC (who writes the test), and he explained that they do not endorse any of the 3rd party companies that sell study guides, and recommend people just use actual tests from past years to study. In retrospect, I would recommend just buying one of the test books from [...] and just going through the test questions and figuring them out. This is your best bet, as other companies are selling a lot of strategies and junk that are a waste of your time. On the real test you don't have time to do strategies anyway, you just have to plow through the questions as efficiently as possible. THe presenter also pointed out that other companies benefit from everyone's fear of tests, so they actually encourage fear to get people to buy it. Also if everyone scored high on the test, they would be out of business, so it is actually to their business benefit to keep people scoring lower... just something to think about!
I like it. October 3, 2009 soxyroxy (Joplin, MO United States) 5 out of 6 found this review helpful
This is the only LSAT book I have right now, but I like it. It has uses only real LSAT questions from previous exams and contains 3 real LSAT practice tests. The online stuff is mainly a tracker, a diagnostic test, some video tutorials, and some extra quizes.
It has study section on each of the different areas of the exam, then a list of practice questions. Each question is explained in detail. Then there are the three full size practice tests with explanations of the answers (these are older tests) and some extra hints and tips.
Maybe I'm biased because I used Kaplan for the ACT and got a pretty good score - but I like this book. Kind of wish I had gotten it from Amazon because I payed full list price at my local bookstore.
