Product Description

In the newest devastatingly intense thriller by #1 New York Times bestselling phenomenon Vince Flynn, his deadly and charismatic hero Mitch Rapp wages a war against a new enemy with the help of a fellow soldier as dedicated and as lethal as they come.

Vince Flynn's thrillers, featuring counterterrorism operative Mitch Rapp, have dominated the imagination of readers everywhere. In them, Flynn has captured the secretive world of the fearless men and women, who, bound by duty, risk their lives in a covert war they must hide from even their own political leaders.

Now, Rapp and his protege, Mike Nash, may have met their match. The CIA has detected and intercepted two terrorist cells, but a third is feared to be on the loose. Led by a dangerous mastermind obsessed with becoming the leader of al-Qaeda, this determined and terrifying group is about to descend on America.

Rapp needs the best on this assignment, and Nash, who has served his government honorably for sixteen years first as an officer in the Marine Corps and then as an operative in an elite counterterrorism team run by Rapp is his choice. Together, they have made careers out of meeting violence with extreme violence and have never wavered in the fight against the jihadists and their culture of death. Both have fought the war on terrorism in secret without accolades or acknowledgment of their personal sacrifices. Both have been forced to lie to virtually every single person they care about, and both have soldiered on with the knowledge that their hard work and lethal tactics have saved thousands of lives.

But the political winds have changed in America, and certain leaders on Capitol Hill are pushing to have men like Rapp and Nash put back on a short leash. And then one spring afternoon in Washington, DC, everything changes.

Using his insider knowledge of intelligence agencies and the military, Flynn once again delivers an all-too-real portrayal of a war that is that is waged every day by a handful of brave, devoted souls. Smart, fast-paced, and jaw-droppingly realistic, Extreme Measures is the political thriller of our time.

4 out of 5 stars Extreme Measures   December 5, 2008
My first Vince Flynn book and a total enjoyable read. A great political thriller with a very current topic. I'll certainly be reading more of Flynn's book and would highly recommend Extreme Measures to anyone who enjoys a quick paced Clancy style triller.

4 out of 5 stars Not his best.   December 5, 2008
It's not his best and I kept expecting the story line to improve. The ending was well done if you park your brain at the beginning. Hopefully Mr. Flynn will get his old form back again as he can write a terrific novel.

3 out of 5 stars Extreme Measures!?! NOT!   December 4, 2008

I have been a HUGE fan of Vince Flynn's since a very nice and enthusiastic gentleman turned me on to him while I was at the bookstore picking up a Brad Thor novel; and I have never been disappointed, until now. Flynn's first novel, Term Limits, was a semi-stand alone story, featuring one of my soon to be favorite characters Scott Coleman. Flynn was able to switch the focus of his series from Coleman and his team to Mitch Rapp in a seamless and cohesive fashion and did it IN THE NEXT BOOK Transfer of Power. So why is the transition from Mitch Rapp to Mike Nash so less fluid and sensible? Why did it seem like much of the book, as previous reviewers have stated, was dedicated to Mike's home life, his kids, wife and/or his erectile dysfunction?! Why did there have to be the stark contrast between Mitch's home life, wife and child dead, no significant love interest, and Mike's, high profile and successful wife and four kids. If one of the prevailing themes has been the difficulty in these "warriors" maintaining close relationships because of the work and dedication involved in doing their jobs-how is it that Mike Nash, who is completely underwhelming as a hero, can be both Mitch's equal and have everything that has been denied to him as well? And not to nit pick, but considering the last book has such an explosive ending, it seems like such a betrayal to portray one of the series strongest characters, Irene Kennedy as this sensible-turned hothead- anything goes-I don't give a crap-kill them all operator. Except for a brief paragraph no other mention is made of what she went through and what Mitch did to get her out of that situation, yet for the last three books we still get the sappy description of how green Anna's eyes were! And don't even get me started on the terrorists! They were trite, cookie cutter standard terrorists (aka Islamic extremists) with little to no depth and pale imitations of the one's that were featured in Transfer of Power, Memorial Day or even Protect and Defend. Then, when you thought it couldn't really get any worse, Flynn decides to treat us all to several "sermons" about how torture is necessary to protect the USA and anyone who disagrees is a "wuss" yada yada yada.

I was so disappointed with this book that it's almost unreal that it's a Vince Flynn book. I ended up giving it three stars because while it wasn't up to the standard that I expect from Flynn, it measures up to what the rest of his fellow action/thriller novelists are writing, so if this is your first time reading one of his books you will probably enjoy it.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book!   December 3, 2008
Fantastic. Best I have read in a while. First time I have read a book by Vince Flynn. After hearing Rush recommend him a few times I thought I would read it. Happy I did. Whatever happened to Tom Clancy? It is hard to believe anyone could give this book anything less than 5 stars unless of course they were a member Of the Taliban or an affiliated terrorist group. What a great writer. Thank you Vince Flynn. Great book for the times we live in today.

5 out of 5 stars Another great effort from Flynn   December 2, 2008

With Extreme Measures, Vince Flynn again presents his readers with a forceful geopolitical thriller. The story largely picks up where Flynn's Protect and Defend left off. Well-known characters Mitch Rapp and Irene Kennedy our back, which relatively the relatively new character of Mike Nash gets more time among the pages. Amidst another fast-paced page-turner filled with plenty of action, suspense, and geopolitical intrigue, Flynn challenges the reader to think about issues facing the country's current leaders. As the incoming Obama administration and the Congress will grapple with, and perhaps change. the rules of engagement and view towards enemy combatants, torture, etc, Kennedy and Rapp present one alternative. Although civil libertarians may cringe, fans of Mitch Rapp will be happy to know that his perspective has not changed. All in all, I thoroughly enjoyed of Extreme Measures. If you are a fan of Flynn's previous work, my guess is that you will enjoy it as well.
