I have been using this Endnote X1 while writing my dissertation and it works like a dream. It is amazingly easy to use and adding citations to my database and inserting them into my dissertation is fast and simple.
I had considered using Zotero, but I need a very specific template for my citations, which Zotero does not have. Before you start using Zotero, I would advise you to check, so you don't waste your time.

At the time of writing Jun22-08, Endnote doesn't work with Office 2008 for Mac. A fix is supposed to come out at any day now and based on the recent release of Windows X2, there may be a Mac Endnote X2 following soon.
Everyone has a different requirement for citation software but this is probably the most refined solution available. They tend to be a couple months behind in Microsoft updates in the past but Endnote works seamlessly with Word for adding references to whatever research paper you are writing. The one downside is that it is expensive- the same price as the academic version of Office. The Cite While You Write feature works great. You can get by with other programs and you can also get by with manual citation management but it's much harder. Zotero mentioned in another review is not even a full-fledged application, but a Firefox extension.
