No growing baby should be without a good shape-sorter--it efficiently teaches a variety of skills (colors, shapes, motor development) and encourages experimentation and exploration. This is a learning toy with classic design. The unfinished solid-maple box is 3.75 inches high by 5.5 inches square and has dovetail joints and a sturdy birch-plywood bottom and top. The top is painted red and slides along tracks in the box to allow access to the inside. A wooden stop keeps it from coming off completely, so it can't get lost. The approximately 1.5-inch wooden pieces are the shapes of cubes, spheres, triangles, and rectangles and are painted red, yellow, blue, and green. (All finishes are nontoxic and polished with natural beeswax.) This is such a beautiful wooden toy that it will also teach a child what quality and craftsmanship are! --Katherine Ferguson
