3 out of 5 stars Great Idea, Poor Controls   July 14, 2008
2 out of 4 found this review helpful

This is a puzzle game for the most part (has adventure mode) and the level design is pretty good, some more challenging than others. I suspect some puzzles may be a bit hard for younger children. The characters are pretty cute and it's a pretty straight-forward game, but the controls need a lot of work. The cursor is not very smooth and goes out of sync easily.

What the game truly needs is a hint system to help the little ones along the way if they get stuck.

3 out of 5 stars Grossly Overrated   July 9, 2008

The game looks good and is mildly fun but not at all deserving of all the great reviews that convinced me to buy it.

4 out of 5 stars great for parties and spouses   July 3, 2008
3 out of 4 found this review helpful

If you love video games but your wife/husband won't touch them -- this is the game for you. This is the kind of game that both you and your spouse will enjoy playing together. It's also the best party game for the Wii available to date.

The "most helpful" review nails it. Boom Blox is extremely intuitive so is very approachable to even those who've never played a video game before. It's very cute, very fun, and makes excellent use of the unique Wii controllers.

The concept is so simple, it's amazing no one has done it before. (The concept works better with Wii controllers so maybe it couldn't have been done well prior to the Wii.) In a nutshell, it's like playing with children's blocks. Make a tower of blocks then take turns throwing marbles at it to knock it down. Or play Jenga -- see how many blocks you can remove before the structure crumbles. Or shoot it with a water hose. Or blow it up with a bomb. Or swing some blocks like a wrecking ball to try to knock down the big towers. Or build a castle fort and try to destroy your opponent's forts. There are dozens of different styles of games all around the theme of structures made up of differently shaped blocks. There are also a handful of shooting gallery games thrown in for good measure.

The game has solo modes including an "adventure", multiplayer competitive modes, and multiplayer cooperative modes. Some modes are great, some are only good, but they're all interesting and fun. Though some modes or levels are initially locked, plenty are unlocked out of the box. This made for a great party gaming experience, as we were able to try out dozens of 2-4 player modes right away. The tutorial mode is also very well done and teaches you the basics inside of 2 minutes, but you don't even need it; even non-gamers will understand how to play this game intuitively.

Why only 4 stars? While hard-core gamers can definitely enjoy this game, it doesn't have a lot of depth or breadth and is a bit too simple to be one of my favorites. Boom Blox was a bigger hit as a party game than Mario Party 8, but the latter has a wider variety of mini games so might last longer.

5 out of 5 stars Impatient when it's not MY turn!!   June 30, 2008

This game is highly addictive- my whole family enjoys playing. We need to get more controllers, in fact, so we can have four people compete!!! I get very impatient when it's not my turn, or when my dad is hogging it!! I love the challenge of getting a gold medal and will play the level again and again until I can knock everything down with 1 ball!

The only downside is that my pre-existing shoulder injury acts up if I throw too hard. It's not necessary to throw as hard as my dad, tho!! :)

4 out of 5 stars I usually don't leave comments but I had to for this one.   June 29, 2008

I have enjoyed Mario Kart Wii, Wii Fit, Endless Ocean, and Wii Sports. I don't know about this one. I just bought it today an I play a good 3 hours. I have mixed feelings about this one. I like games that make you think but this is a strange game. I was very excited by all the good reviews but I didn't have as much fun playing this Bloom Box as I have with other I named above.

Although I would play this game again some other day I don't look forward to play it as much as Mario Kart. It is a slower game that takes time. It gives me the feeling like I am playing Solitare. Listen, if you are thinking about getting this game I suggest you spend the 5 bucks and rent it before buying. I agree with the other guy/gal that said that this game should have been priced at 20 bucks.

I am giving it 4 stars because I do think that this game is very original. It is will made! Also, I believe it has potential as a 2 player game.
