A disappointment November 17, 2009 Mark Hanrahan (London, UK) 3 out of 5 found this review helpful
This is basically an inferior re-hash of the first Modern Warfare. The locations are different - and I really liked that part of the action now takes place in the US - but the innovations sadly seem to end there.
I found the solo campaign monotonous. There are brief vehicle sections (snowmobile/boat), but they feel like an afterthought. They are easy to complete first time, quite simplistic and simply not very much fun.
We've no more AC-130 spectre gunship section, replaced by the less-fun predator drone, which isn't a level on its own.
The shooting missions are fine, but none of them left me particularly wow-ed, with the exception of the somewhat hardcore airport/terror attack scene, but that was more for the very high level of violence, rather than any fantastic gameplay.
If you're a big first-person shooter fan, you'll probably enjoy this, but not as much or for as long as you deserve to for the inflated price tag. I'm not particulary good at these and I finished the solo campaign in an evening and a half.
Put it like this - if someone had never played MW1 or 2, I would probably advise them to buy the first one.
Never been a big fan of C.O.D .... but this is excellent. November 17, 2009 N. Thompson (Hull, England) 0 out of 2 found this review helpful
I have never been a big fan of Call of Duty but this was excellent. The single player mode is excellent and has the production worthy of a Hollywood blockbuster but sadly is a little too short in length. The online mode is also an improvement on the previous installments. A truely brilliant game and a worthy purchase.
Disappointing but entertaining November 17, 2009 Mr. Simon Parkinson (On the Grid) 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
With all the hype and the Massive reviews you'd expect this to be at least as good as Modern Warfare 1, unfortunately it's not.
The multiplayer side of this game is very slick, with many maps, good progress control, decent interface, and good service. The way of choosing game is nice and simple and works very well - overall the MP experience is better than MW 1.
However... the single player game is not so good. Firstly it's pretty short - took me under 9 hours to finish on regular difficulty and i'd not played a FPS in about a year. Secondly the plot is, well, even less plausible, consistant or enjoyable than the previous one. OK, so the plot is not exactly the most important thing but it is used to hang the characters off and if they keep getting into situations that you hate because of events out of your control, it's very irritating. The plot is also gratuitous - it has so many scenes there just for the shock value (and no, not talking about the airport scene). Just because they can do it, they do, even if it's dumb.
Secondly the game is very sinlge-track. Little in the way of choices is available, just one staged fire fight after another, or one path to go down. Exceptions to this do exist (snipers in the snow for example) but they are few, and too short. While frenetic gun fights are fun, they get a little old quickly.
Another irritating thing is the "you have to die once to figure out how to get past" bit. Seems that too often you get a scene where you must die to work out a new control, or a trap, or something that you need to get round. Stupid and irritating.
Graphics are nothing special. Settings are fun in the main, but little to be really impressed about.
overall, given the price, I am disappointed. Sad really cos if this is the kind of game getting high reviews on IGN, then where does the franchise go from here....
First Ever Review on Amazon for a Game that blew me away! November 16, 2009 Dallers1985 (England) 1 out of 3 found this review helpful
Firstly if you are reading this and haven't bought the game yet then i feel sorry for you.
Secondly the other reviews on here that dont give this a 4/5 just ignore right now.
This is no way COD4 again its unique of course yes the game is on the same genre and base of COD4 if they changed it from COD4 would we still like it? No we wouldnt!
Thirdly 5 Stars for everything no point me listing em all just 5 STARS!
I have been bored of stories lately nothing gets close to the times when i played Baldurs Gate and Final Fantasy 9 but hey I was in a rutt and followed this story, like every other no feelings for it first couple of levels yawn! Then boom it jumps into life you start to realise the impact of if this was real life and how great it is, there is so much going on and so much blood on the screen heart pumping and 2 hours later i paused to remember this was a game! The story just gets better and better and when you get the end you wish it hadn't come but how satisfying it was!
After all that you remember the whole point of the game multiplayer and yes it similiar but with so much more! Brand new maps vast amount of new weapons and even incorperating what Rainbow Six offered customizable scopes.
If after all that you want to go back to the story you have Spec Ops one or two player missions to keep you going!
Overall £26 in sainsbury's well spent I was even happy to pay for the full price close to release! The best graphically challenging war game out there for a FPS. How brilliant it is defies belief!
